Custom DRAPERY 101 ~ not like your Grandmother’s

10 Dec

Modern.  Tailored.  Elegant. Drapery???  Yes… it is all in the details (it is always in the details), and in the context of the room.  Never forget the all important FUNCTIONAL!

Example—

without drapesNew paint.  New flooring.  Fabulous new chandelier.  Glass and metal desk.  A view of the river.

new drapesCONSIDERATIONS:

  • 100 year old building – really hot in the summer, cold in the winter
  • South Facing Window – beautiful light but sometimes too intense
  • Office space – function extra important (important everywhere, of course!)
  • 100 year old building – the floor dips one way, the ceiling dips the other way

drapesDRAPES ~ DECISIONS I MADE

  • I chose to add thermal lining for extra insulation
  • I chose to invert the pleats for a clean, tailored look at the top
  • I always choose lots of fullness as well as a good overlap in the center (never skimp on fullness)
  • I extended the drapes far enough past the window so when open they do not block the view
  • I chose a lining that still allows some light through when they are closed
  • I had simple, matching tie backs made – just in case – as there is a baseboard heater under the window
  • I wanted something neutral, yet masculine and the pinstripe was perfect when I found it
  • I chose the  fabric, THEN I picked my wall colour

hardwareHARDWARE

  • As important to the finished look as the fabric chosen
  • I was so excited to find this hardware from the UK  – sleek, glossy with chrome accents, perfect to go with my drapes (available in four different finishes)
  • Function – how great is it to have the hidden track?  You can not even see the function, which glides smoothly and effortlessly, also very important for daily use.
  • Also hidden is a pull rod or fling rod, so no need to grab your fabric and get it dirty.
  • Because of the baseboard heater, brackets that extended out 5″ from the wall were needed
  • A good installer is key!

FinishedFINAL THOUGHTS

This room feels more polished and elegant with the addition of drapes.  It also softens the room with so many hard surfaces present – there is a whole wall of shelving not seen.  This is a tiny room, yet the drapes emphasize the 9′ ceiling height.  The drapes frame the view of the river in the distance.

I will also add blinds as a second line of defense for the mid-day sun before summer arrives.  While not a major consideration in this project, the right window coverings help protect rooms from UV damage and fading, which in turn extends the life of carpets and furniture.  A worthwhile investment indeed.
